Laptop system memory
Almost as pressing as hard drive capacity is how much system memory, or RAM you need in your laptop.
For the typical business user, 256 MB will probably do just fine. However if you’re going to be creating or manipulating multimedia content on your laptop on a regular basis, spend the extra money to fill that thing with as much RAM as it can hold.
128 MB of system memory is not enough for running applications efficiently under Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. If you use your notebook for occasional typing and web browsing you could get by with 128 MB of RAM but 256 MBs would definitely make you more comfortable. Serious users should try to get a laptop with at least 512 MB of system memory or more.
It is very important that the sistem memory on a laptop is purchased initially, as a lot of notebooks have only one or two memory expansion slots and you will have to throw away the old memory when you upgrade.
Most new laptops come equipped with 512MB of RAM, and taking into account most of today's applications, you shouldn't settle for anything less, otherwise you will be slowed down. |
